The Calming Effect of Art + Nature

Sunday, September 22, 2013

Today is the first day of spring. Well, for those in the Southern hemisphere it is. For those of us in Chicago, it is the first day of fall. A beautiful, crisp day full of warm sunshine and cool breezes.

For the scientifically minded, September 22 is the autumnal equinox: a change "in the orientation and angles between the Earth and its nearest star,” according to Lindsay Abrams of, and we can expect the season to shift at exactly 4:44 pm EDT. Very formal business, this changing of the seasons stuff.

I had the pleasure of spending the weekend with family and friends lakeside. Lake Michigan was at her finest, offering shimmering waves reflecting an azure sky dotted with happy clouds. Yep, it was that good.

After a stroll along the shore, the final consensus was that nature was at once invigorating, soothing and calming. What better time to introduce the Calm Gallery, an online gallery featuring prints, gifts and homewares by artists, designers and print-makers from around the world, all curated by the husband and wife duo Lucas + Hayley, of the creative, cat-loving tribe.

Above, La Terre, a print from Double Merrick, a British illustrator and designer who resides in rural France and chooses nature as his worthy subject matter along with other seemingly irresistible sources. Mr. Merrick created a series of minimalist color screen prints in hushed tones including my favorite, La Mer, La Lune and La Soleil. Merrick also references classroom wall charts and language textbooks in his spare + distinct artwork.

Perhaps it's the former educator in me or perhaps it's my collection of vintage English grammar books that has created a true fan of Merrick's prints as well as that of the menagerie of artists crafting quirky and classic works of art at the Calm Gallery {maybe I just like anything with the word calm in it}. If you're a type fan, head on over to their sale section for some tea towels the likes of which you've never seen before and some postcards with pep {yes sir, it's the little things like tea towels that make me happy}.
