{eco travel} luca chiara: wanderlust + the weekender bag

Friday, July 8, 2016

i've been on the lookout for a durable bag to meet my many needs as a self-declared vegan vagabond. i need just the right luggage to stand the wear + tear that skipping across continents + bounding across borders necessitates. i need a bag that can keep up. and i've found the one. fellow travelers, read on.

luca chiara is a new york based accessories brand that has been crafting quality travel bags, wallets + more for over one hundred years. the business was founded in italy in 1902 by luca chiara, the great-great grandfather of martin salerno. martin, the current owner, took the enterprise from a leather-based manufacturer to a completely cruelty-free company.

when martin discovered the sobering facts about the environmental, animal + human cost behind leather production, he set out to change the tide of his own company. having learned of the hazardous pollution created by toxic chemicals used by tanneries in processing skins, with chromium-laden effluent being regularly flushed into fresh water sources, martin became a man on a mission.

martin sourced animal-friendly, man-made materials including cotton canvas + soft grain vegan leather, eventually creating products made with respect to earth + animals. having previously worked at kenneth cole + ben sherman, martin employed his knowledge of the fashion industry to design products, like this weekender bag, that are both striking + sturdy. you're going to like the results.

first, here's a confession: i'm a girl that likes to snack, which means that at some point on most of my trips, food crumbs {bits + pieces of nuts, granola, chips + chocolate} end up at the bottom of my luggage or bags. ouf. i'm not proud of this, but there you have it. i've spent a lifetime shaking my bags upside down, but those days are over.

luca's travel bags all feature removable canvas inserts, which is quite ingenious. inserts not only enable easy cleaning {you can hand wash them or use a washing machine}, they are also incredibly compact, so you can fold them up and store them away once you've unpacked your items. all bags are lined with inside pockets to organize your essential travel items, and there's a detachable shoulder strap with a soft, curved shoulder pad + the bags are expandable, which means i can fit clothes, camera equipment + all the snacks i want inside.

i've traveled with this bag over the summer, and it is truly a well-made bag. i love the comfortable shoulder strap, the industrial strength zippers + hardware as well as the pliant canvas insert. this bag is my new trusty travel partner for all future adventures. finny+dill recommended, peta approved. there you have it.

until next time, stay green dear hearts! ♥
